What is a defibrillator?
A defibrillator or AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) is a device that is used to save a person’s life when they have a Sudden Cardiac Arrest by sending a safe electric shock or pulse to their heart. The person should also be given CPR.

Statistics show that a person has a 6% chance of surviving an out-of-hospital Sudden Cardiac Arrest with just CPR. But the chances of survival go up to as high as 76% when a defibrillator is also used.

Where can I find defibrillators in the UK?
We have over 10,000 defibrillators/AEDs in the UK and the numbers are growing all the time. You can find them on the side of a community centre, parks, workplaces, supermarkets, shopping centres and in schools. Look for them and remember where they are.

Defibrillators are often stored in a yellow cabinet with a green AED sign above. They are sometimes locked. If you need to access the defibrillator, call 999 and the emergency services will tell you the keypad number over the phone.

If you want to find your nearest defibrillator, Google “Where is my nearest defibrillator/AED?” You can also use defibrillator apps that often also supply CPR instructions

Who can use a defibrillator?
No one should feel nervous about using a defibrillator. They are designed for anyone to use.
What do I need to know when buying a defibrillator?
First of all, make sure you buy the right defibrillator. Some come with different pads for adults and children. The problem is a novice user can waste valuable time reading instructions and changing pads – and every second counts when someone is in cardiac arrest.

At Help Save Lives, our defibrillators are suitable for both children and adults without changing the pads. All you need to do is flick a switch.

How do I store a defibrillator?
If you purchase a defibrillator and need to keep it outside, you must check the lowest temperature the defibrillator will work at. We supply the Mediana A15 AED which operates from zero degrees. So, if this device is kept outside we recommend you store it in a heated AED cabinet.
How do I register a defibrillator?

If your defibrillator is in a locked box, you must register it with the emergency services so they can issue the keypad number in the event of an emergency. Get more information here. LINK

How do I monitor and service a defibrillator?
There is no need to take out a maintenance contract on a defibrillator because they are automatically checked and serviced every day. But you need to make sure someone is responsible for monitoring the indicator at least every week to check that it’s working.
If the defibrillator indicator has a green tick, it’s good to go.

If the defibrillator indicator has a red cross or circle, this usually means either the electrode pads or the batteries need changing. The standard life span of defibrillator pads is 2 years and the batteries 5 years if not used (standby). Check this data when you get your defibrillator and make a note of the dates so you can be confident that the defibrillator is ready for use when required.

What is a LifeVac anti-choking device?
A LifeVac Anti-Choking device is a non-powered, non-invasive, portable suction device used to clear an upper airway obstruction. In the UK, it is licensed for use in adults only.

The LifeVac anti-choking device can be used on someone who is sitting, standing, or laying down. It is often used in the care sector. In a recent independent research study carried out at the University of Warwick. LINK . The abdominal thrust removed 71% of blockages whereas the LifeVac removed 99% of blockages.

How do you use a LifeVac anti-choking device?
The LifeVac anti-choking device is simple to use. The procedure is: place – push – pull.
So first, PLACE the mask on the face of the choking person, over the mouth. Then PUSH down. The LifeVac will only suck up because it has a one-way valve. The LifeVac creates 3 times more safe pressure than the abdominal thrust. Then PULL up. The blockage causing the choking should appear in the mask. You might have to do this 2-3 times.
